When you hear the word “cybersecurity”, you might immediately think about a hacker sitting in front of his computer with codes on the screen. However, cybersecurity is much more than that.
We have included a FREE Cybersecurity Checklist that you can download once you’re done reading this article.
Cybersecurity is a topic that most people have a vague idea of, but in today’s modern world, it has already become a glaring personal and national security issue. Before we get started, let’s first define what cybersecurity is.
It is the practice of defending, protecting, and recovering computers, servers, mobile devices, electronic systems, networks, and most importantly data from any threats or malicious attacks. It can be divided into several categories such as: Application Security which focuses on keeping software and devices safe from threats; Information Security which protects your data privacy and integrity both in storage and on transit; Operational Security which incudes the process of handling and protecting data assets; Disaster Recovery and Business Continuity which defines how a business responds to any cybersecurity incident that may disrupt operations; and lastly, End-user Education which addresses the need to educate employees about cyber hygiene.
Cybersecurity encompasses everything that pertains to the protection of any data against malware launched by cybercriminals. And with a society that is more technologically reliant than ever before – the importance of cybersecurity among individuals and organizations is on the rise.
Along with the development of new solutions and services which enables organizations and end-users to strengthen their cybersecurity, cybercriminals are also becoming more sophisticated – changing their target and method of attack to bypass different security systems. This has resulted in a massive increase in cybercrime because information theft is the most expensive and fastest-growing segment of internet threat.
A lack of focus on cybersecurity can be costly for anyone; from the economic costs of repairing or replacing damaged systems, reputational costs of losing customer trust in the market, and regulatory and compliance costs from fines or sanctions due to the cybercrimes committed.
Given the nature of cyberattacks and the consequences that comes with it, there can be ways for you to increase your internet security and boost your cyber hygiene. First, you must educate yourself or your employees about the types of malware threats. You must also invest in solutions that enable you to immediately respond to attacks, continuously scan for data exposure, and keep you compliant to the latest data privacy regulations.
Cybersecurity affects everyone. This is the reason why its importance should no longer be questioned. It is an umbrella term that covers all systems and processes used to keep your sensitive information safe. As we continue to leverage new technologies for data security, there is no doubt that the role of cybersecurity will increase in the future – and there’s no better time than now to ensure that both you and your business are secured from emerging threats.
